Spotlight: Sseko Designs
January 14, 2015
Recently I came across a company that not only offers beautifully made product, but also has a mission worth sharing. Sseko Designs is one of those rare companies that sees life outside of solely making profit, and wants to better lives one scarf, sandal, or bag at a time.
Sseko Designs is an ethical fashion brand that hires high potential women in Uganda to make sandals and product to enable them to earn money through dignified employment that will go directly towards their college educations to ensure they will continue pursuing their dreams.
They only design and source ethically made products from East Africa that create jobs, empower artisans, and help end the cycle of poverty by building healthy communities and economies. The founder of Sseko Designs, Liz, first discovered her passion for women’s rights and global issues after visiting Uganda in 2008.
She witnessed first hand the effects of extreme poverty as well as the gratitude towards education by a community of young women her own age. After hearing so many of the women’s stories and the fact that many struggled to find work after graduating from a secondary school she knew she had to do something.
Sseko was born.
Liz had first designed a sandal that would quickly grow into a brand that offers more than just products. Sseko Designs now employ a team of 50 women in Uganda. These University bound women complete a nine month employment program where they are able to earn and save money. This opportunity enables them to continue on to college and pursue leadership positions in society. An empowering program that can change the course of a young women’s life in Africa.
If that’s not enough to love Sseko Designs then check out their versatile and comfortable sandals, intricate designed scarves, or must have leather bags.
