Transitioning to Healthier Choices

Deciding to make healthier choices when it comes to eating can be tough. Old habits die hard, especially on busy days. That’s why preparing meals on Sundays or days when I have a little more free time is something that has been SO helpful. I usually throw some chicken on the grill, cook some ground turkey on the stove (I love seasoning with cumin) and place veggies in the oven. Just by doing this, you’ve got the basis for most of your meals for at least the next few days!
Now that we’ve got that down, let’s talk about making these meals super tasty so that this is a ritual that will keep you coming back for more. Here are some of my favorite meals to make and even some healthy food swaps to keep them clean.
One of my all time favorites is a taco salad or rice bowl. I typically use my ground turkey or cut up some chicken breast, throw in a handful of spinach, some corn, black beans, cilantro and brown rice. I like to use the microwaveable rice packages because they’re so easy and they have options like brown rice or quinoa. For the toppings, I like to put a dollop of organic salsa, some string cheese (low fat mozzarella) and a scoop of greek yogurt in place of sour cream. Using greek yogurt adds extra protein and, no lie, it tastes JUST like sour cream! This is one of my favorite food swaps.
Another thing I love to prepare ahead of time are sweet potatoes! I usually cut them up; rub them with coconut oil and sprinkle on some cinnamon. Throw these babies in the oven on 425 degrees for about 15-20 minutes and refrigerate until you’re ready to eat. I like pairing these with a turkey burger on a whole-wheat bagel thin or, if you’re trying to lower your carb intake, try using a lettuce wrap.
These are just a couple of my favorites, I’ll keep sharing recipes and food swaps in the future because I could go on forever! Just because you’ve made the decision to lose weight or maintain a healthier lifestyle doesn’t mean you have to feel like you’re on a strict diet or dread your meals.
