5 Everyday Uses for Coconut Oil

Coconut oil has become a new phenomenon in the homes of many. The natural elements and health benefits of coconut oil have been shown to increase energy, to kill certain strands of bacteria, to moisturize and heal damaged hair and skin. I love using my Skinny & Company Coconut Oil for these 5 everyday uses. You may be surprised by a few of them, but the last one is my favorite!
1. To Shave Your Legs
The consistency of coconut oil, when in liquid form, is the perfect moisturizer to use when shaving your legs. Not only will it protect you from razor burn, but it will leave your legs feeling silky smooth.
2. To Whiten Teeth
A great natural way to whiten your teeth can be done by using coconut oil, check out the steps below from Everyday Roots!
About a tablespoon of coconut oil
In the morning, before you brush your teeth, scoop out a tablespoon or a little less (depending on the size of your mouth) of coconut oil. You can either soften it, or just put it in your mouth (I usually do the latter, and just let it soften.) Push, swish, and “pull” the oil through and around your teeth for 10-15 minutes, then spit it out, rinse with water, and brush your teeth.
3. Use for Cooking + Baking
Try substituting butter, olive oil or cooking spray with coconut oil for sautéing or baking.
4. Skincare/Makeup Remover
Coconut oil not only moisturizes your skin, it can be used to remove makeup, how awesome is that?
For eye makeup, coat and cover lashes and eyelids with coconut oil and gently massage for a few seconds to loosen makeup, or apply and wipe with a cotton pad. Wash off in warm water and repeat steps for skin.
5. As a topping
Coconut oil can be used for many different things, from beauty to the use of cooking! Try this peanut butter popcorn recipe using coconut oil as an alternative topping instead of butter!
Peanut Butter Popcorn
Recipe adapted from With Style & Grace (Makes approximately 4 servings)
1/4 organic popcorn kernels [important to get organic here- if not, it’s likely GMO corn)
2 TB unrefined coconut oil
2 TB organic peanut butter
1 tsp sea salt
Optional additions: raisins, chopped dark chocolate or chocolate chips, coconut flakes, or slivered nuts
Prepare popcorn as normal in an air popper, or my favorite method, the whirly pop. Or, if you don’t own either of those tools (why not?), you can do it the old fashioned way: heat 1 TB coconut oil in a large soup pot with a lid. As the oil heats up, add kernels and cover with a lid. Wait for popping to start, then gently shake the pot until the popping increases, the slows down. Pour popcorn into a large bowl when done. Add a bit more coconut oil to the pot to melt. Drizzle over the popcorn.
In a seperate saucepan, add peanut butter and melt over low heat. Add the warmed peanut butter over the top. Sprinkle the popcorn generously with sea salt and toss to combine with a spoon (note: not your hands- it will burn you. I may be speaking from experience.) Add any other additions you’d like here!
