One of your very first orders of bridal business after getting engaged? Assembling your girl crew! These ladies will have your back through the whole wedding planning process so make sure you have theirs too. We’ve compiled all your need-to-know advice here. Consider it a crash course in Bridesmaids 101. With these tips, you and your bridesmaids will be happy and excited for the big day, sans any drama!

Picking your squad. When it comes to selecting your bridesmaids, prioritize family (yes, that includes his sisters) and close friends. Oftentimes, picking your ladies can suddenly feel like Survivor–there are alliances (if you ask her, then you feel like you have to ask her, her, and her because you hang out with all of them). So take a deep breath and compile your entire list in one sitting. Feeling overwhelmed? You can always keep it simple by asking family only.

Popping the question. He asked you–now it’s your turn to ask them! Doing something special shows that you really care about your bridesmaids and appreciate all the time and effort they’ll invest in your wedding. You can go elaborate with bridesmaids gift baskets or simple but sweet with a handmade card. Whatever you do, your girls will feel loved and totally game for tying all 200 of those favor bags.

This way, they’ll be in the loop and have plenty of time to request dates off for the bridal shower, bachelorette party, and wedding day. It will also set an exciting tone for all the fun to come and they’ll appreciate the heads up on all the deets.

Taking their feelings into consideration. Yes, you might be in love with that $800 designer mermaid bridesmaid dress…but it might not flatter everyone’s bodies or budgets. Adopt a relaxed approach to their attire and take their styles and personalities into account. Consider letting them pick their own dress in a specific color or opting for the more affordable dress. You want them to be happy and comfortable on your wedding day–that way it’ll be fun for everyone!

These ladies are special to you so show them lots of love. After all, that’s what weddings are all about!
