Skin Prep for Your Wedding Day: What You Need to Know

BRIDE / FEATURED / MAKE-UP / PLANNING / STYLE

One of the many things to cross off on your wedding to-do list is to figure out your wedding day look. This might include hairstyle, makeup, accessories, mani and pedi, and maybe even a wax or sugar scrub to feel prepared for your big day. While all of these things are great to do for a polished wedding look, there’s one very important item you don’t want to forget to include on your list that will make you glow from the inside out: a facial or skincare service.

I recently enjoyed a Signature Facial at SkinSpirit in University Village and couldn’t believe how smooth and luminous my skin felt and looked afterwards. I’ve had a few other facials in the past few years but nothing quite like this intensive and attentive facial that focused on all areas of my skin. From exfoliating to clearing blemishes and leaving my skin moisturized for days, I couldn’t imagine a better way to prepare your skin for a day as important as a wedding day! There are a few things to know before heading into SkinSpirit for your facial that you will want to keep in mind a few weeks before your wedding day. As an aesthetician for 20 years, Kavina from Skin Spirit answers those specific questions for us below.

Best time for a bride to get a facial before her big day:

Realistically, a bride should consider beginning skincare treatments 6 months to a year before her wedding. I’ve often thought, at a minimum, facials and clinical skincare products should be included in your budget when planning for your special day due to the nature of skin rejuvenation and the time it may take to improve overall skin quality. When reserving your venue/church a year or more prior to your wedding; scheduling a comprehensive consultation and treatment regimen should be coordinated simultaneously.

Do you suggest just one facial or better results with a few sessions?

Getting older- it’s inevitable. We can not out run our genetics (intrinsic aging) but we can prevent environmental factors (extrinsic aging) that cause imbalances in moisture, texture, tone and laxity. One facial is better than none at all but does little to address any real skin concerns. In as much time as it took to acquire unwanted idiosyncrasies within the skin, it will take a conscious effort by you and your skincare professional to address your specific and individual skincare concerns.

I like to use the analogy of preparing for a marathon. You drink lots of water, eat wholesome food, get plenty of rest, train and condition your muscles and cardiovascular health to withstand the demands placed on your body to perform at peak level. The commitment to improving and preparing your skin to be at its best draws similar parallels. Your clinical skin care products prepare your skin to receive the ideal treatment outcomes.

What can a bride expect during her visit to Skin Spirit for a facial?

Any client of SkinSpirit, new or seasoned, can count on a detailed skincare consultation with an open discussion detailing the steps of the facial and options within the treatment prior to any facial. Treatment indications, contraindications and realistic endpoints with expected downtime will be discussed and agreed upon. Written and verbal recommendations for clinical home care products along with alternating treatment modalities (i.e. facials, micopenning, dermaplane, chemical peels, Botox, filler and/or laser rejuvenation) are typically given to see an ideal skincare outline. It’s a Big-Picture approach that can be scaled down and tailored-to-fit a clients lifestyle and personality.

What is the downtime after such service as a signature facial?

Depending on the agreements made between client and their skincare professional during the initial consultation, downtime (flaking skin, redness, extraction sites or erythema) ranges from as little at 24-48 hours to 4-5 days contingent on depth of applied treatments, skin integrity and general health of a client. Any imbalances (hydration, surface buildup) within the skin will need to be improved and your overall skin quality enhanced before any in-depth corrective treatments can be safely administered.

The term ‘Skin Conditioning’ refers to the preparing skin 4-6 weeks with facial treatments and clinical homecare before any treatments with significant downtime (5-7 days).

Any other services you would recommend a new bride to look into for her wedding day?

I personally love Micropenning (Collagen Induction Therapy) treatments. I give the visual to my clients of lawn aeration which takes a diseased, yellow, and dry landscape to a vibrant, lush and rich green grass. Micropen creates small micro channels within the skin triggering your own wound-healing response to increase your natural growth factors, improving circulation, hydration and cell turn over (proliferation) necessary for healthy skin. Micropen has on average 24 hours of redness or downtime with a quick turnaround. Clients are able to easily schedule treatments around their professional and social calendars.

Any tips on how to achieve your best skin daily?

Every day, rain or shine is an SPF day! I can’t stress prevention enough- you will save time, money and your sanity by protecting your skin from the long-range damage effects of the sun. Applying a quality vitamin c product enhances your protection from UV damage when used prior to SPF. In addition, advances in skincare science have allowed for multifaceted approach with treatment based moisturizers with retinoids to keep the processes of cell turnover (desquamation and proliferation) at the youthful ideal of 28-40 days. Invest in quality clinical skincare- it literally pays you back.
