You found the right guy–now you need to find the right engagement photographer. You want to make the best choice because your engagment photos are extremely visible. You’ll probably post them on social media, use them on your save-the-dates, invitations, and wedding website, and possibly even display them at your wedding. It goes without saying that you want fantastic shots. Luckily, with a little effort, those great images will be yours to treasure for all time! The first thing you need to do is have a conversation with your partner to decide what style fits your relationship best. Do you want candid images? Styled photos? A classic feel or artistic spin? Once you determine your vision, its time to start looking! Start by asking friends for recommendations and searching online by typing keywords like “natural light photographer” into the search bar. After you find a few possibilities, take a look at each photographer’s portfolio (and their instagram account) and google their reviews on wedding websites and Yelp. It’s the one time where cyber stalking is encouraged!
The next step is to make contact! Submit an inquiry on the photographer’s site to see their availability works with you and your fiance’s schedules and request pricing. This way you can start narrowing down your options. Also, once the conversation is started, now is the time to ask questions about possible shooting locations and your overall vision for the day. It’s always nice if your photographer has shot at your venue before.
Another thing to consider is meeting in person before you officially book your photographer. It’s a great idea to meet up at a coffee shop or the photographer’s studio so you can break the ice and make sure all three of you jive well together. After all, you’ll be spending at least half a day together–you want to make sure you and your fiance can relax and be yourselves around your photog. Take some time to get to know each other. A good engagement photographer will be interested in hearing about your relationship and the ways they can best capture your personalities.
If the initial emails and meeting in person go well, you may have found the one! Clarify the final details–like how much is due up front and when your photographer will deliver the photos after the shoot and the details of your contract–and then sign on the dotted line. If the shoot goes well, you might want to consider booking your photographer for your wedding, too! Some photographers have special pricing if you reserve them for both your engagement and bridal photos so be sure to ask.
Oftentimes, we hear about couples who find an awesome photographer and it’s the start of a great relationship! They have them shoot their engagement, wedding, holiday photos, and then, eventually, baby announcements!
