Let’s be real. Being a bride isn’t all champagne and tulle and happiness! Saying “yes” is just the beginning of a beautiful but sometimes stressful journey. Not only do you have to navigate the nitty-gritties of getting hitched, like filing paperwork and combining finances, but you have to plan a wedding, all while working or studying.
When I got engaged, I moved to Seattle, oversaw my design business, AND planned my wedding long distance. Talk about really fun but also really overwhelming! However, I relied on my years of bridal industry experience to get me through–and I’ve compiled my best tips here for you. So, if you’re in the throes of wedding planning and feeling like its hard to keep the bridezilla at bay, take a deep breath and read on, beautiful bride!
PLAN AHEAD. There a big things that you want to take care of with ample time, like booking your venue and finding your wedding gown. Start working on these sensitive to-do’s as soon as you get engaged. This way, you won’t be forced to make quick, hasty decisions and, once they are checked off your list, you can relax a little and focus on the smaller, easier decisions, such as what flavor of cake to have!
DELEGATE. Your bridal party isn’t just there to look pretty on your wedding day–they are also there to help you! When it comes to addressing invitations or writing out name cards, get your girls to assist. Tasks that seem overwhelming can make for some fun times with your besties. Just open up a bottle of wine, put on some Gossip Girl reruns, and its a girl’s night–wedding planning style!
SPEND TIME TOGETHER. It’s easy to take out your stress on your guy but resist the urge! The two of you are setting your communication patterns now so, when you’re feeling pressured, talk to your lovey so he can help you deal. Life is full of ups and downs so try to habituate yourself to staying open and communicative–it’ll serve you well now and in all the years to come. Time together always helps so make sure you have date nights and include him in the wedding planning details (especially the cake tastings!).
TAKE CARE. Or, in other words, treat yo’ self! There is a lot on your plate so make sure you take care of yourself. Get a Pumpkin Spice latte, go for a walk, take a yoga class, or light a fragrant candle. Indulge in whatever makes you feel centered and happy. A clear and calm mind will help you when it comes to choosing between napkin colors or invitation fonts!
KEEP PERSPECTIVE. In our digital age of Instagram and Pinterest, it’s so easy to feel like your wedding isn’t beautiful or expensive enough. Remember that the most important thing–having a beautiful marriage with the man you love–isn’t predicated on how much you spend on your wedding or how perfect it looks. Your wedding is just the beginning of a life full of laughter, tears, and all the emotions that go in between!
Being a bride is a special, fun time. Cherish it and don’t sweat the small stuff. It goes by so fast so take your time and enjoy it in all its stressful beauty!
