Whether you’re jetting off on a fabulous vacation or traveling for business, it’s hard to stick to your usual healthy eating and fitness routine. Lately I’ve been traveling quite a bit, so I’ve been able to come up with some tips to keep you feeling fit.
Create healthier options while dining out.
Restaurants almost always accommodate small adjustments when patrons are ordering meals. Ask your server to have your food cooked with olive oil rather than butter. Order a salad before your meal so that you can fill up on healthy veggies before the “good stuff “ and ask for the dressing on the side.
Also, check items on the appetizer list and order a la carte. Most of the time our eyes are bigger than our stomach, especially when trying a new restaurant. Keep in mind when traveling that you can’t take home leftovers.
Avoid airport food.
While many of the larger airports are starting to offer healthier options, most of the time the quickest options are the fast food and processed snacks. Plan ahead and bring healthy snacks with you in your carry on.
My key travel snacks are always protein bars, nuts, a fruit (apple or banana is easiest), and a sandwich or a grilled chicken salad. Try the Chickpea of the Sea salad sandwich from Healthy Grocery Girl as an easy travel lunch. If you’re really trying to stay on track, bring a bag specifically made for carrying meals as your carry on (6 pack bags are great). You can fit at least three full sized meals, snacks and a protein shake.
Try these hotel room exercises.
Warm up: 25 jumping jacks, 25 knee ups, 12 burpees (3 rounds)
Legs: 20 squats (you could pick up luggage to add weight), step ups either on the bed or on a chair (alternating legs), glute bridges
Arms: 15 push ups, 15 chair or bed tricep dips, curls using a full water bottle or your duffle bag (You can get creative with this.)
Abdominals: Side plank crunch (12 on each side), 15 sit ups with or without some weight, To finish up, hold on to the chair legs while lying on your back and do 12 reverse crunches.
Enjoy your time off!
Don’t stress out about letting loose on vacation but don’t go too crazy! I would be lying to you all if I told you that I didn’t enjoy some delicious, unhealthy grub, or indulge in some yummy cocktails during my getaways. I like to reward myself for the hard work I put in. So, go create some fun memories and fully enjoy yourself without the guilt!
